Extended Metaphor

  • Also known as a conceit or sustained metaphor

  • An author’s exploitation of a single metaphor or analogy at any length through multiple linked tenors, vehicles, and grounds throughout a poem or story

  • In a metaphor, the tenor is the subject

    • Is what’s getting reimagined by other part of the metaphor (the vehicle).

EX: “George Clooney is a total angel,”

  • Clooney is the tenor

  • Angel is the vehicle
