Developmental Milestones: One Month and Three Months

Developmental Milestones at One Month

  • Age: One Month

  • Gross Motor Skills:

    • Head Control:
    • Head lag present; this indicates that the infant has very poor head control.
  • Fine Motor Skills:

    • Grasp Reflex:
    • Present from 0 to 3 months. This reflex involves the infant’s automatic response to grasp objects.
    • Babinski Reflex:
    • Present from 0 to 12 months. This reflex occurs when the sole of the foot is stimulated, leading to the toes curling.
    • Rooting Reflex:
    • Present from 0 to 4 months. This reflex is critical for feeding; it helps the infant turn their head towards the stimulus when the cheek is stroked.
    • Tonic Neck Reflex:
    • Present from 0 to 4 months. Often referred to as the "fencing reflex," it occurs when the infant turns their head to one side, causing the arm on that side to extend while the other arm bends.
  • Language Development:

    • Listening and Responding:
    • Infants begin responding to touch and voices, indicating the early stages of sensory motor communication.
  • Social Cognitive Development:

    • Caregiver Interaction:
    • Infants often seek safety and comfort with caregivers by actively looking at their faces, which indicates social awareness and attachment formation.

Developmental Milestones at Three Months

  • Transition to the following point has begun, as indicated by the expectation of further assessment in later developmental stages.
