visual marketing

  • visual marketing is the art of marketing with images, video, and other visual elements

  • as part of a larger marketing strategy

  • visual marketing helps communicate more effectively with the target consumers

  • that means… we will be working on visual and design

requirements

  • adobe creative cloud (CC)

    • adobe account

    • desktop or laptop. tablets will not be sufficient for this class

    • photoshop, illustrator, indesign (desktop)

    • express (online)

    • adobe scan (phone app)

  • recommended textbook: killer visual strategies, by amy balliett

    • csuf library has 2 physical copies, and full text online

standard grading

  • in this course the plus and minus system will be used.

  • doesnt curve grade. may round up the final course grade from A- to A and B- to B, if its less than 1%.

attendence policy

  • in person: course instruction live, in person

    • cancellation: zoom and asynchronous

  • try not to leave class early and use lab time effectively to work on the group project

  • if you cant make class, find a partner to help with class lectures

  • session 1: tuesday 7-9:45pm, room CP129 & session 2: wednesday 7-9:45pm, room sgmh 2311

communication

late assignment

  • all assignments are due 7pm on the due date, except for 3 individual projects, 11:59pm. if canvas marks it late, then its a late submission

  • one late homework or discussion is allowed with a 25% deduction

  • late assignment is allowed up to 1 week after the due date, at 7pm

redo assignment

  • all assignments are due at 7pm on the due date, is canvas marks it late, then its a late submission. late submission is not eligible for redo.

  • one (1) redo assignment is allowed without deduction

  • due at 7pm on the day of the final exam

  • redo assignments allowance is not applied to final group project

weekly discussion

  • 10 weekly discussions, the first one is due next week

  • examples are images and/or videos

  • there are two parts

    • intial post: minimum 50 words

    • 2 response poses: minimum 30 words for each post

  • you will need to post your initial post first, before responding to your classmates posts

  • each discussion is worth 10 points

homework

  • 6 homework assignments

  • each discussion is worth 30 points

  • you will be graded on how well you follow instructions

  • you will not be graded on creativity or design

  • the objective is for you to get started with adobe programs

individual project

  • 3 individual projects. no late submission is accepted

  • each project is worth 100 points

  • you will be graded on creativity and design

  • the objective is for you to show your understanding od design and knowledge of the target consumers

project 1

  • project 1 - product ads

  • create a set of 2 ads that will be featured on 2 different platforms (billboard & magazine)

  • software: adibe photoshop & adobe express

project 2

  • project 2 - illustrative poster series

  • create a series of three 11” × 17“ posters that will focus on a social cause

  • software: illustrator & express

project 3:

  • project 3 - tv commerical

  • direct and compose one 30-60 second commercial for a company

  • software: adobe express or any other video editing program (with approval)

group project

  • 1 group project. 6-7 members. worth 200 points

  • you will be graded on creativity and design

    • step 1&2: group grade ; research

    • step 3, 4, and final: individual grade

    • your team members will grade you on your contribution, your team can also let you go; if that happens, you will get a 0 for the entire project

  • this is an advertising campaign. each member is responsible for at least 2 touchpoints/ designs

  • the objective is for you to showcase everything youve learned in class

  • group presentation, no need to dress up just show up on time

final exam

  • 1 final exam, worth 160 points

  • in person, on canvas

  • requirements

    • bring laptop to class (not applicable for computer lab)

    • 40 questions, multiple choice

    • study guide will be provided on the last day of class (week before final)

authentication of student work

  • all assignments must be completed individually unless specified otherwise

  • submit works through canvas. no email

  • submissions will be authenticated to ensure originality

  • plagiarizing someones work or your own will result in an “F” for the course, regardless of intent

copy right

  • all course materials are copyrighted; unauthorized posting, sharing, or distribution is prohibited

  • unauthorized distribution may result is disciplinary action, academic penalties, and/or legal consequences

  • when using copyrighted materials, proper attiribution

generative ai

  • students may use generative ai tools, as specified in individual assignmenrs

  • your work must clearly distinguish between your contributions and the ai tools contributions

  • all ai assisted work must be properly cited, following apa guidlines

  • cite ai generated images with details such as the ai tools name, version, and company, and the images creation date

  • use generative ai tools ethically and responsibly

retention of student work

  • student work may be shared as an example of excellence, without displaying the students name

  • shared work will be used solely for educational purposes and not beyond that scope

  • to opt out of having it shared, email

keys to be successful

  • spend time each week to work on:

    • your individual projects

    • make progress on group project

  • work on weekly discussion and homework. every point counts

  • turn in assignments on time. dont wait until the last minute to submit on canvas

  • try to attend class every week. all lectures will be on the final

  • look at inspirations » use pinterest, mood board, design website & magazine

next class

  • discussion week 1 - due 7pm 9/02

  • review all assignments on canvas

  • assign to a group by monday 09/01. otherwise, i will randomly put you in a group

  • minimum 6 members oer group

  • install 1 adobe app on your laptop. it its not compatible, contact IT department and borrow a laptop for the semester

  • check out the adobe website: adobe firefly, adobe express, and adobe stock. make sure to use your CSUF account

  • download the adobe scan app on your phone (free)
