Dosage Calculations and Conversion Guidelines
Basic Unit Conversions and Abbreviations
Seamless bidirectional conversion (left to right and right to left) between all standard units is required for dosage calculations and for evaluation in NP1.
Household and Metric Volume Conversions:
- 1cup=8ounces (Abbreviation: 1c=8oz)
- 1ounce=30milliliters (Abbreviation: 1oz=30mL)
- 1tablespoon=15milliliters (Abbreviation: 1Tbsp=15mL)
- 1tablespoon=3teaspoons (Abbreviation: 1Tbsp=3tsp)
- 1teaspoon=5milliliters (Abbreviation: 1tsp=5mL)
- 1liter=1,000milliliters (Abbreviation: 1L=1,000mL)
Weight and Mass Conversions:
- 1grain=60milligrams or 65milligrams (Abbreviation: 1gr=60mg or 65mg)
- 1gram=15grains (Abbreviation: 1G=15gr)
- 1kilogram=2.2pounds (Abbreviation: 1kg=2.2lbs)
- 1kilogram=1,000grams (Abbreviation: 1kg=1,000G)
- 1gram=1,000milligrams (Abbreviation: 1G=1,000mg)
- 1gram=1,000,000micrograms (Abbreviation: 1G=1,000,000mcg)
- 1milligram=1,000micrograms (Abbreviation: 1mg=1,000mcg)
Length Conversions:
- 1inch=2.54centimeters (Abbreviation: 1in=2.54cm)
Standard Biological Unit Conversions:
- 1unit=1,000milliunits (Abbreviation: 1unit=1,000mU)

Mathematical Rules and Notation Rules for Dosage Calculations
Leading Zero Rule:
- Always include a leading zero before a decimal point when the number is less than 1 (e.g., 0.4).
Trailing Zero Rule:
- Never use trailing zeros following a decimal point (e.g., write 3.2, never 3.200).
Rounding Rules for Drops:
- Drops must always be rounded to the nearest whole number.
Timing and Execution of Rounding:
- Rounding should never be completed before or during problem solving.
- Rounding is exclusively performed as the final step of a dosage calculation.
Standard Place-Value Rounding Procedure:
- Examine the digit directly following the targeted place value:
- If the digit is 5 or higher, round up the target place value digit.
- If the digit is less than 5, leave the target place value digit unchanged.
Roman Numerals
- Essential Roman Numerals (1 through 10):
- 1=I
- 2=II
- 3=III
- 4=IV
- 5=V
- 6=VI
- 7=VII
- 8=VIII
- 9=IX
- 10=X
