  • The First Barbary War

    • CAUSE: Pirates off the Barbary Coast raid U.S. ships

      • looted goods, kidnapped men and enslaved them, or demanded ransom

    • Ruler of Tripoli demanded payment of $225,500 and declared war when Jefferson refused to pay

      • Naval bombings on Tripoli from U.S. caused the ruler to surrender and sign a peace treaty.

    • EFFECT:

      • demonstrated U.S. could wage war off its shores

      • Enhanced American national identity & pride

  • Embargo Act of 1807

    • CAUSE: Napoleonic Wars between the British and French

      • British Royal Navy impressed U.S. sailors and forced them into the navy.

      • Chesapeake-Leopard Affair: British warship HMS Leopard attacked & took the Chesapeake and took sailors

        • Jefferson signs Embargo Act of 1807 in response

    • Prohibits U.S. ships from leaving ports until British and French stop seizing them

    • EFFECT:

      • Harmed American economy

        • farmers could not sell overseas and unemployment

      • Smuggled goods between U.S. & Canada

      • Non-Intercourse Act of 1808

        • trade w/ other nations except Britain & France

        • no effect from this act
