CAUSE: Pirates off the Barbary Coast raid U.S. ships
looted goods, kidnapped men and enslaved them, or demanded ransom
Ruler of Tripoli demanded payment of $225,500 and declared war when Jefferson refused to pay
Naval bombings on Tripoli from U.S. caused the ruler to surrender and sign a peace treaty.
EFFECT:
demonstrated U.S. could wage war off its shores
Enhanced American national identity & pride
Embargo Act of 1807
CAUSE: Napoleonic Wars between the British and French
British Royal Navy impressed U.S. sailors and forced them into the navy.
Chesapeake-Leopard Affair: British warship HMS Leopard attacked & took the Chesapeake and took sailors
Jefferson signs Embargo Act of 1807 in response
Prohibits U.S. ships from leaving ports until British and French stop seizing them
EFFECT:
Harmed American economy
farmers could not sell overseas and unemployment
Smuggled goods between U.S. & Canada
Non-Intercourse Act of 1808
trade w/ other nations except Britain & France
