Thomas Hobbes

17th century English political philosopher, scientist and mathematician.

Human Nature

  • Pessimistic view of human nature.

  • Humans were naturally driven by desire and a pursuit of happiness.

  • As resources are in short supply, and humans not cooperative, Hobbes argued they would not live peacefully together.

  • He refers to this existence as the state of nature.

Government and State

  • If people wanted peace and security, there needs to be a strong state such as a monarchy.

  • People should choose to enter a social contract wherein they receive safety and protection but had to surrender their freedom.

  • Even if people were unhappy with the government, they shouldn’t rebel.

Society and Identity

  • All individuals cede freedoms for protection.

  • This would not be unusual for people as they are born into society with laws.

  • Power of the sovereign is derived from the individual not god.

Economy and Globalisation

  • Economic views are not well known.

  • Sovereign had limitless right to take properties and resources for the benefit of the state and the good of society.

  • Any attempt to afford individuals property rights would lead to return to state of nature.
