A1.1.0 - THE BIG PICTURE (kognity)

  • water’s formula - H20, is made up of 2 hydrogen atoms that are attached to one oxygen atom by a covalent bond

atom - the smallest particle of an element that retains the properties of said element

covalent bond - a chemical bond between two atoms that’s formed by sharing electrons

prior knowledge

  1. there’s 118 chemical elements. Each one has a specific number of protons which leads to defining characteristics

    • proton is a subatomic particle that’s positively charged & is found in an atom’s nucleus

  2. the structure of atoms include protons & neutrons (which are located in the central nucleus) & electrons in outside orbitals

  3. outermost electrons = valence electrons. pairs of valence electrons can be shared between atoms, which forms a covalent bond. valence electrons can be lost in an atom (creating a cation - cuz the atom will be more positive) or gained by an atom (creating an anion - cuz the atom will be more negative)
