RATES AND RATIOS

Ratios are a comparison of two numbers by division. They are not comparing numbers, rather, they are finding numbers that relate to each other. RATIO - relationship of two numbers between division.

How do you compare and show who numbers are related?

½ - ratio’s and fractions are the same thing. When we use a fraction in a particular way, we call it a ratio. [ RATIO - FRACTION ]. How do we use them in the real world?

EXAMPLES - These two sequences are the same thing. they both equal, 1/2. In the case of a fraction, we treat it as a single number.

½ - Fraction - we can use 1 and 2 to show how many apples you will eat. but we know ½ means one half, so you ate half an apple.

½ - Ratio - We don’t treat it as the same number. we pay attention to the top and bottom number, because we use them to compare to different things. For example. If you were going on a picnic, and planning for every two people to come with one sandwich, this makes it 1 to 2, OR 1 sandwich and two people.

Thats the difference. ½ [F] is the sandwich. ½ [R] is - Numerator - sandwich, and denominator - people.

Fractions show the part of something. Ratios show the relationship or comparison between two diffrent things.

Even though fractions and ratios are the same thing, they can be represented differently. It is common to see ratios written like 1:2.
