WEEK ONE

Academic writing is usually written in the third person and has formal tone.

Assume you are writing to other experts. Build on the work that has already been done.

Academic writing is highly polished and proofread. Free of errors and poor punctuation.

Grammar

Subject, verb, sentences and sentence fragments.

Sentences must have a subject (person, place or thing) a verb (an action or state of being) and a completed idea.

Example: I swam. — “I” is the subject and “swam” is the verb.

You do not need an object for form a complete sentence.

Incomplete sentence = sentence fragments.

Subject = What the sentence is about.

To identify the subject in academic writing, look for who or what is doing that action.

Verbs identify the action, state or occurrence

There are 3 types of verbs

Action verbs: What the subject os doing
