Linear Kinematics & Kinetics

Kinematic tools

Asking: 1. Is it moving? 2. Is it getting faster or slower?

  • Position: tells us where something is in space, RELATIVE to some other thing

  • Displacement: how far something has moved relative to its initial position

  • Velocity: displacement over time (m/s)

  • Acceleration: change in velocity (m/s²)

Kinetics

Asking: Why is it moving? Why is it getting faster or slower?

  • ∑F =ma

  • a = ∑F/m

Examples:

  • Standing

    • ∑F=ma

    • we a mass, but no acceleration so ∑F=O

  • Rising

    • ∑F=ma

    • a = vf- vi /time

      • (0.5 m/s - 0 m/s)/1sec = +0.5 m/s²

    • ∑F=m(0.5m/s²)
