• 16 to 99:

  • Write the ten and add the ones (y)

  • Y is only used in compound numbers 16 to 99

    • 35: treinta y cinco

    • 142: ciento cuarenta y dos

    • NOTE:  115 =  ciento quince

• 16-19 and 21-29 may be written as one word.

  • When this is done from 16 - 19, y becomes i and z becomes c.

    • diez y siete = diecisiete 

  • When this is done from 21 - 29,  drop the e , y becomes i

    • veinte y uno = veintiuno

• Accent Marks:  only the following numbers have accent marks:

  • Dieciséis, veintidós, veintitrés, veintiséis

• 100: 

  • cien for the number 100 only; cien before a noun 

    • 100 cats = cien gatos

• 101-999 

  • Write the hundreds, then tens and ones. Do not use the word y between hundreds and tens.

    • 762 = setecientos sesenta y dos

• 200-900 

  • The –os of cientos becomes –as before a feminine noun.

    • 300 girls = trescientas chicas

• Uno and combinations of uno (veinte y uno) become un before a masculine noun and una before a feminine noun.

  • un libro una mesa

  • treinta y un libros treinta y una mesas

• Un is NOT used with ciento and mil but MUST be used with millón (which requires de when a noun follows.

  • ciento veinte mil sillas 120,000 seats

  • un millón de estudiantes a million students

To tell the time on the hour:

Es la una: It's one o’clock (1:00)

Son las dos: It's two o’clock (2:00)

Son las tres: It's three o’clock (3:00)

Son las cuatro en punto: It's four o’clock on the dot (4:00)

Use “es la” before “una” only (singular).

Use “son las” for any other hour (plural).

To tell the time in the first half of the hour, within the first 30 minutes:

Step 1: State the hour

Step 2: “y”

Step 3: State the number of minutes past the hour

Use “y cuarto” to say “a quarter past” the hour.

Use “y media” to say “half past” the hour.
