  • Innate Depravity: Inherently flawed, born evil

  • Narrative persona: the voice or character that an author adopts to tell a story

  • Narrative Distance: How active the author’s persona is in the story

  • Satire: Literature that mocks for a purpose

  • Parody: An imitation for comedic affect

  • Dues Ex Machia: “God from machine”, something entirely impossible happens because the author wants it to

  • Picaresque: Somebody on the run, story

  • Bildungsroman: A “coming of age” story.

  • The “id”: Animal self (what drives us to meet our physical needs)

  • EGO - Conscious Self (The ability to think and evaluate)

  • SUPER-EGO - Social Self (The things I do because I am expected to, societal involvement) 

  • Malapropism: the intentional misuse of a word for dramatic or comedic affect
