Neocortex Lobes
Lobes of the Neocortex: The neocortex is divided into four main lobes, each with specific functions:
Frontal Lobe: Associated with reasoning, planning, parts of speech, movement, emotions, and problem-solving.
Parietal Lobe: Involved in perception of touch and pain, and the integration of sensory information.
Temporal Lobe: Primarily responsible for auditory information processing, memory, and emotion.
Occipital Lobe: Specialized in visual processing, interpreting visual stimuli.
Broca's Area
Definition: Broca's area is a region in the frontal lobe, typically in the left hemisphere, known for its role in language production.
Effects of Damage: If Broca's area is destroyed, a person may develop Broca's aphasia, characterized by difficulty in speech production. Individuals can understand speech but struggle to form complete sentences, often speaking in short, incomplete phrases.
Wernicke's Area
Definition: Wernicke's area is located in the temporal lobe and is crucial for language comprehension.
Effects of Damage: Destruction of Wernicke's area can lead to Wernicke's aphasia, in which an individual can produce fluent speech but has poor comprehension and produces nonsensical words and phrases, making it difficult to communicate meaningfully.
Hemispatial Neglect
Definition: Hemispatial neglect is a neuropsychological condition that occurs when a person ignores stimuli on one side of their body or their environment, usually due to damage in the right hemisphere of the brain.
Implications: Individuals may not notice objects on their left side or may fail to brush their left side of their body, even though they have a functioning physical ability to do so.
Corpus Callosum
Definition: The corpus callosum is a large bundle of neural fibers that connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Function: It facilitates communication between the two hemispheres, enabling the integration of cognitive and sensory processes. Damage to the corpus callosum can lead to disruptions in coordination and information sharing between hemispheres.
Primary Motor Cortex
Definition: The primary motor cortex is a region located in the frontal lobe responsible for the planning and execution of voluntary movements.
Functionality: It sends signals to initiate movement in different parts of the body. This area is organized somatotopically, meaning specific regions correspond to movements in specific body parts.
Primary Sensory Cortex
Definition: The primary sensory cortex (also known as the primary somatosensory cortex) is located in the parietal lobe.
Function: It processes sensory information from the body, such as touch, temperature, pain, and pressure.
Somatotopic Organization: Similar to the primary motor cortex, the primary sensory cortex is organized in a way that corresponds specific body regions to specific areas in the cortex.
Neuron Structure
Basic Parts of a Neuron: Neurons are composed of three main parts:
Cell Body (Soma): Contains the nucleus and organelles, maintaining the cell's health and functionality.
Dendrites: Branch-like structures that receive signals from other neurons and transmit them towards the cell body.
Axon: A long projection that transmits electrical impulses away from the cell body to other neurons or muscles.
Action Potential
Definition: An action potential is an electrical impulse that travels down an axon when a neuron sends information.
Process: It occurs when a neuron's membrane potential rapidly rises and falls due to the influx of sodium ions and the efflux of potassium ions, leading to a temporary increase in positivity inside the cell.
Significance: The action potential is vital for neural communication, enabling the transmission of signals across neurons rapidly.
Neurotransmitter
Definition: Neurotransmitters are chemical substances that transmit signals across synapses between neurons.
Function: They bind to receptors on the surface of target neurons, influencing whether the neuron will initiate an action potential.
Example of a Neurotransmitter: One of the most well-known neurotransmitters is dopamine, which is involved in reward, motivation, and motor control.
