Gen Z is over credit cards as debit cards and BNPL gain traction: survey by Jeena Sharma, April 8, 2025.
This article represents how Gen Z consumers are abandoning credit cards in favor of debit cards and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services. Sixty-three percent of Gen Z respondents have abandoned credit cards due to the anxiety they cause. Even so, 54% used BNPL during their 2024 holiday shopping spree, quicker than the 50% who used credit cards. Instead, it is motivated by Gen Z's desire for more power over their finances, as BNPL provides clearer payments and no high interest rates.
I was surprised by the significant shift in Gen Z's financial preferences, especially the fact that they are abandoning credit cards in favor of debit cards and BNPL services. I expected credit cards to remain the dominant payment method, but their preference for more controlled and anxiety-free options like BNPL shows a clear trend toward financial transparency. I chose this article because it's interesting to see how a younger generation is reshaping financial habits, which could have lasting effects on both retailers and the financial industry.
The article describes to the course by demonstrating how the financial trends and behaviors of new generations, such as Generation Z, are transforming the economy and the retail sector. The shift toward more transparent and managed payment options, such as debit cards and BNPL, reflects a change in consumer preferences that may be relevant to research into business models, marketing, and financial management. It gives an analysis of how businesses must adapt to these new trends in order to remain competitive and meet the needs of customers.
