Assignment Details

  • Format Options: Students can choose how to present their community story:

    • Written

    • Oral

    • Video

  • Unique Assignment Aspect: Allows for creativity beyond standard written essays.

Word Count Guidelines

  • Written Assignment Length: 1,215 words excluding references.

  • Citing Sources: References from the textbook are encouraged; lectures can also be cited.

  • Research Flexibility: Students may include additional materials outside of the textbook and lectures.

Community Focus

  • Subject Matter: Write about a rural community. Flexibility offered for urban topics if a specific community is chosen (e.g., a neighborhood in Toronto).

  • Content Requirements:

    • Provide context: location, demographics, culture, ecosystems.

    • Help the grader (Natalia) understand the community.

    • Keep introduction concise; focus more on the story.

Capital Framework Analysis

  • Requirement: Analyze at least two forms of capital in the community.

  • Capital Discussion:

    • Examine how capital is enhanced, threatened, or absent.

    • Address the reality of the community regarding these capitals.

  • Fictional Writing Allowed: Students can create fictitious narratives or embellish true stories.

Citation Style

  • Flexibility in Citation: Any consistent style is acceptable (MLA, APA, Chicago).

Preparation Suggestions

  • Drafting: Start drafting or outlining the assignment this week.

  • Possible Presentation Length: Scripts should fit within 5-10 minutes if presenting orally.
