Nursing Applications
Introduction to Nursing Program Prerequisites
Focus on understanding the requirements to apply to the nursing program during the first semester.
Prerequisites Overview
Total Prerequisites: 11 prerequisites required for the nursing program.
7 prerequisites must be completed prior to application.
Out of these 7:
5 must be related to science and math.
At least 3 of these 5 must be science courses.
Detailed Prerequisite Requirements
Prerequisites for Application (7 total):
English Level 1 and Level 2
Mathematics Course:
Must be categorized as one of the top math courses within Degree Works.
Elementary Statistics (MAT 1401):
Can be included in any of the three math placements of Degree Works.
Chemistry (CHEM 1151 and 1152):
These are recommended starting points.
College Algebra:
Prerequisite for Chemistry and Physics.Precalculus: Required as a prerequisite for Physics.
Note: Highly suggest taking Sociology 1101 as it is beneficial for nursing, although not a requirement.
Course Sequencing Suggestions
Students should take their first science course before other courses.
Recommended sequence:
BIO 1107 (Introduction to Biology) should be taken before A&P 1 (Anatomy & Physiology).
After first science course, it's suggested to take:
BIO 2251 (Anatomy & Physiology I)
Consider taking Microbiology thereafter, typically in the fall post-application.
Application Guidelines and Timing
Application Deadlines:
Must have completed all academic requirements by January 31 for the following fall semester.
For students intending to start in spring, all prerequisites must be completed by August 10.
Advising is available for assistance with application timing and course selection.
Grading and Academic Record Considerations
Minimum Grade Requirement: An average of 78 or higher is critical for competitiveness in application.
Credit Hours:
Must complete at least 18 credit hours at KSU to use KSU GPA; otherwise, the transfer GPA is considered.
Students may retake science courses, but only two attempts allowed.
If a student earns a D, that course cannot be retaken for credit towards application.
The higher grade counts if multiple attempts yield different results.
TEAS Exam Requirements
All students must take the TEAS exam and scores must be submitted with the application.
Recommended to prepare using available online study resources.
It is essential to take the TEAS exam at least a month prior to application deadlines to allow for retakes if necessary.
Importance of Extracurricular Engagement
Engagement in the Honors College:
While beneficial, it does not directly influence nursing program admission.
There is an honor scholarship available for Freshmen, which may enhance students' profiles.
Admission Evaluation Process
All applications are reviewed collectively at the application deadline, not on a rolling basis.
Acceptance numbers fluctuate each semester based on program capacity and can be affected by previously granted grants from organizations like Wellstar.
Strong emphasis placed on grades and GPA during the selection process.
Competitiveness varies based on applicant pool; more rigorous performance increases chances of admission.
Transfer Students and Previous Nursing Programs
Transfer students from other nursing programs may have their previous coursework considered but must meet the same prerequisites as new applicants.
Students dismissed from other programs must provide disclosure during application to understand implications on their eligibility.
Final Remarks
Students are encouraged to maintain diligence, focus on GPA, and ensure all required courses are completed to prepare adequately for application.
Adhering to deadlines is critical; late submissions can lead to waiting for the next application cycle.
Seek support from academic advising for tailored guidance throughout the enrollment process and course enrollment.
