Driver Education Chapter Notes

Objectives of the Chapter

  • Prepare drivers to:
    • Start the vehicle and accelerate safely.
    • Use effective steering techniques.
    • Back a vehicle safely.
    • Decelerate and stop the vehicle safely.
    • Exit the vehicle safely.

Starting the Engine

  • Steps to start the vehicle:
    1. Put right foot on the brake pedal.
    2. Ensure the parking brake is engaged.
    3. Ensure the vehicle is in park.
    4. For key-based ignition: turn the key clockwise; for push-to-start, press and hold the button.
    5. Allow engine to idle for 10-15 seconds.
    6. Check instrument panel for warning lights.
    7. Turn on low-beam headlights if they don’t automatically activate.
    8. Drive at moderate speed for initial warm-up of engine.

Vehicle Types

  • Electric Vehicles (EV):
    • Powered by electricity; no engine to start.
    • Turn on power, select Drive/Reverse, and drive.
  • Hybrid Vehicles:
    • Both electric motor and fossil fuel engine.

Steering Techniques

  • Basic Steering:
    • Use both hands for control; position at 9-3 or 8-4.
    • For sharp turns:
    • Use hand-to-hand or hand-over-hand techniques.
    • Avoid crossing hands over the centerline of the steering wheel.
  • Visual Guidance:
    • Look 12-15 seconds ahead in the city; 20-30 seconds on highways.
    • Use a visual target as a reference for intended path.

Backing the Vehicle

  • Challenges of Backing:
    • Limited visibility behind the vehicle.
    • Risk of missing large objects, especially close ones.
    • Always back slowly and check surroundings.
    • Avoid busy or high pedestrian traffic areas.

Accelerating the Vehicle

  • Steps to move forward:
    1. Press the brake pedal.
    2. Shift to Drive gear.
    3. Release parking brake.
    4. Engage turn signal as appropriate.
    5. Check mirrors and blind spots.
    6. Transition foot from brake to accelerator smoothly to begin moving.

Braking and Deceleration

  • Braking Techniques:
    • Controlled braking for precision.
    • Use ankle and toes for brake pressure control.
    • Avoid abrupt stopping; smooth transitions are key.
    • Types of Braking:
    • Controlled/Squeeze: Gently slows without weight transfer.
    • Threshold: Brakes applied just short of locking up.
    • Trail: Sufficient brake pressure to slow without abrupt weight shift.

Stopping and Securing the Vehicle

  • Steps to Secure:
    1. Come to a complete stop.
    2. Keep foot on brake and set the parking brake.
    3. Shift gear to Park.
    4. Turn off ignition and lights.
    5. Exit safely and lock doors.

General Practice Tips

  • Practice Smooth Driving:
    • Control your speed using accelerator; brake as a secondary measure.
    • Practice stopping smoothly at predetermined targets.
    • Alert other drivers when slowing down by lightly tapping brake lights before regular braking.
    • Remember that ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) helps maintain control in hard braking situations by preventing wheel lock-up.

Vulnerable Road Users

  • Always be aware of pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users when exiting or maneuvering the vehicle.

Adjusting to Different Vehicles

  • Take extra care to understand a new vehicle's handling, acceleration, and braking characteristics before driving significantly.
