Life Orientation Grade 11 Notes

Group A: Fundamentals (Compulsory)

  • Compulsory subjects for all learners

    • Two official languages:

    • Home Language

    • First Additional Language

    • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy

    • Life Orientation

Group B: Elective Subjects (Choice)

  • Elective subjects: A learner must choose at least 3 subjects from the following options:

    • Accounting

    • Agricultural Management Practices

    • Agricultural Sciences

    • Agricultural Technology

    • Art

    • Business Studies

    • Civil Technology

    • Computer Applications Technology (previously known as Computer Studies Standard Grade-Literacy)

    • Consumer Studies

    • Dance Studies

    • Design

    • Dramatic Arts

    • Economics

    • Electrical Technology

    • Engineering Graphics & Design

    • Geography

    • History

    • Hospitality Studies (previously Home Economics)

    • Information Technology (previously Computer Studies Higher Grade-Programming)

    • Mathematics: "Paper 3" (geometry, probability); "Advanced Programme Mathematics" (calculus, further algebra, and one of: matrices, statistics, mathematical modeling)

Minimum Requirements for Admission

National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • To qualify for a National Senior Certificate:

    • Achieve a minimum rating of 3 (i.e., 40% or more) in 3 subjects, with one being an official language at Home Language level.

    • Achieve a minimum rating of 2 (i.e., 30% or more) in 3 additional subjects.

Important Note
  • Compulsory Language Requirement:

    • It is mandatory for a learner to pass an official language at home language level with a minimum of 40%.

Additional Subjects
  • If a learner offers more than the minimum number (7) of subjects, results in additional subjects will count towards meeting the minimum requirements.

Higher Certificate, Diploma, and Bachelor Degree Admission

Higher Certificate Level
  • Requirements:

    • Pass the NSC

    • Meet language requirements: Must pass either English or Afrikaans at least at the 1st additional level (30% or more).

Diploma Level
  • To qualify for entry:

    • Pass the NSC with the following:

    • One official language at home language level at 40%

    • 3 other subjects at 40%

    • 2 subjects at 30%

    • Similar language requirements as the Higher Certificate level must be met.

Bachelor Degree Level
  • To qualify for entry:

    • Pass the NSC with:

    • One official language at home language level at 40% or more

    • Four subjects from the designated list at 50% or more

    • Two subjects at a minimum of 30%

    • Language requirements: One official language (English or Afrikaans) at 1st additional level (30% or more).

Designated Subject List (Effective for 3 years from 2008)

  • Designated subjects include:

    • Accounting

    • Agricultural Sciences

    • Business Studies

    • Dramatic Arts

    • Economics

    • Engineering Graphics and Design

    • Geography

    • History

    • Consumer Studies

    • Information Technology

    • Languages (one language of learning and teaching at a higher education institution and two others)

    • Life Sciences

    • Mathematics

    • Mathematical Literacy

    • Music (only National Senior Certificate Music course)

    • Physical Sciences

    • Religion Studies

    • Visual Arts

Important Notes on Subjects
  • Non-designated subjects may count towards the Admission Points Score (APS), and may be specific to entry requirements of different institutions.

  • Learners are advised to verify their results against institutional requirements.
