Causal Definitions and Their Types

CAUSAL DEFINITION

  • A causal definition clarifies the meaning or intension of a term by identifying the cause that produces the reality signified by the term.

Types of Causes

  • Efficient Cause: This refers to the agent that enables something to happen or brings about the reality.

    • Example: The efficient cause of pneumonia is the pneumococcus virus.
  • Material Cause: This refers to what constitutes the thing itself.

    • Example: Water is defined as H2O, representing both its material and formal aspects.
  • Formal Cause: This describes how the material of the thing is organized or structured.

  • Final Cause: This refers to the end goal or purpose of a thing.

Examples of Definitions

  • Descriptive Definition: Lists the characteristics necessary for categorizing a species.

  • Definition by Example: Provides data for the definition rather than a straightforward definition itself.

    • Etymology: The historical breakdown of the word.
    • Definition by Synonym: Providing a synonym to explain the term.
  • Arbitrary Definition: Considers whether there is a consensus regarding the meanings of words.

Rules for Definitions

  • Convertibility: Definitions should be convertible with their subject; they must accurately reflect what they define.
  • Positivity: Definitions should inform what something is, rather than what it is not.
  • Clarity: Definitions must utilize clear language that is neither obscure, vague, ambiguous, nor figurative.
  • Avoidance of Redundancy: Definitions should not use words with the same root as the word being defined.
  • Structural Consistency: Definitions should be symbolized by a parallel, not mixed, grammatical structure.
