Objectives:

In the lesson, you will:

● identify examples, benefits, and limitations of models used in science

● state the law of conservation of energy and describe the various forms of energy

● describe situations of energy transformations

● diagram the path of energy transfer through biotic and abiotic systems

Notes

What is a scientific model?

A representation of an object, system, or concept used to analyze, explain, or predict real-world phenomena.

List one benefit and one limitation of using scientific models.

Benefit: Helps visualize complex, microscopic, or extremely large systems.
Limitation: Cannot represent every detail or feature of the real system with complete accuracy.

Key Questions and Terms

Notes

Describe how models are used to predict phenomena.

Models use established scientific laws, data, and mathematical patterns to simulate scenarios and forecast future outcomes or explain unseen events.

List two scientific questions that would be best explained using a model.

1. How do solar and lunar eclipses occur?
2. How do tectonic plates move during an earthquake?

Key Questions and Terms

Notes

Describe two main types of energy.

1. Potential Energy: Stored energy based on an object's position, chemical bonds, or state.
2. Kinetic Energy: Energy of motion.

Give one example of potential energy transforming into kinetic energy.

A roller coaster at the top of a hill (potential energy) converting into movement as it rolls down (kinetic energy).

Describe mechanical energy.

The total sum of potential and kinetic energy in an object used to do work (Emechanical=PE+KEE_{\text{mechanical}} = PE + KE).

What does the law of conservation of energy state?

Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only change from one form to another or be transferred between objects.

If you drop a bouncing ball from a height of 40 cm40\,\text{cm}, explain why it can only bounce back up to a height of less than 40 cm40\,\text{cm}.

Some of the mechanical energy is transformed into thermal energy (heat from surface impact and friction) and sound energy, leaving less mechanical energy available for vertical bounce height.

Forms of Energy:

Form of Energy

Description

Example

Radiant

Energy carried by electromagnetic waves

Sunlight, X-rays

Motion

Energy possessed by an object due to its movement

A rolling bowling ball, wind

Chemical

Energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds

Food, batteries, gasoline

Sound

Energy produced by vibrating matter traveling through a medium

Playing a guitar, human voice

Electric

Energy caused by the movement of electric charges

Power lines, lightning strikes

Thermal

Total kinetic energy of atoms and molecules moving within matter

Heat from a campfire, boiling water

Nuclear

Energy stored within the nucleus of an atom

Nuclear fission in power plants, fusion in the Sun

Types of Energy Video

Key Questions and Terms

Notes

List four types of radiant energy.

Visible light, ultraviolet (UV) rays, infrared radiation, X-rays.

Explain how plants may participate in energy transformations.

Plants absorb radiant energy from the Sun and convert it into stored chemical energy through photosynthesis.

How do infrared waves, UV waves, and microwaves affect us?

Infrared: Felt as heat on skin.
UV: Stimulate Vitamin D production but cause sunburn.
Microwaves: Cook food by exciting water molecules.

What causes sound energy?

Vibrations of particles traveling as mechanical waves through a medium (solid, liquid, or gas).

List two sources of chemical energy.

Food and batteries.

What is elastic energy? List two examples of where it is found.

Potential energy stored when an object is temporarily stretched or compressed.
Examples: Stretched rubber band, compressed trampoline spring.

How does gravitational energy change from sea level to an elevated height?

Gravitational potential energy increases as height above sea level increases (PE=mghPE = mgh).

Explain how mass affects energy.

An increase in mass directly increases both kinetic energy (KE=12mv2KE = \frac{1}{2}mv^2) and potential energy (PE=mghPE = mgh).

Notes

Explain an example of how energy is transferred from one form to another in the video.

Electrical energy supplied to a toaster converts into thermal energy (heat) and radiant energy (glowing red coils).

Draw or describe an energy flow diagram showing the energy transformation from one form to another.

Radiant Energy (Sun) →\rightarrow Chemical Energy (Plant photosynthesis) →\rightarrow Mechanical Energy (Animal movement after eating).
