Passiv vs aktiv

• Passive-’ The car is being stolen by the thief’

• the active ‘The thief steals the car’

In German to form the passive use OBJECT werden +past participle

e.g. Das Auto wird gestohlen

to provide information about WHO did it use von +dative

Das Auto wird von dem Dieb gestohlen

Die Kerzen werden (von meinem Bruder) angezündet- the candels are being lit (by my brother)

To use the passive in past tense use wurden instead of werden

e.g. Das Auto wurde gestohlen- the car was stohlen

Die Bürger wurden kontrolliert.- the citizens were controlled

To use the passive in future tense use werden PP werden

e.g. Das Auto wird gestohlen werden- the car will be stolen

Die Keksen werden verkauft werden- the biscuits will be sold
