312 Vocabulary Lesson Two

Directions: Study the vocabulary word, root word, prefix or suffix. The sentence written below this highlighted word is an example of the vocabulary word used in a sentence. Use these sentences to facilitate your understanding of each word. For Monday- you need to come to class showing knowledge of the word and its definition using your multiple intelligence.    

1. antipathy- an intense dislike (noun) Syn: aversion Ant: affinity

So great was her feeling of antipathy that she was afraid it showed in her face.


2. antithesis- an exact opposite; an opposite extreme (noun)   Syn: opposite Ant: same

Love is an antitheses of hate.


3. badinage- playful, teasing talk (noun) Syn: teasing Ant: comforting

                   -to banter; to tease with playful talk (verb)

Although it started out as a badinage, it quickly escalated to cutting insults.

4. banal- common, ordinary (adj.) Syn: trivial, insipid     Ant: original, fresh

His banal remarks quickly bored the entire class.


5. baroque- overly decorated (adj.) Syn: ornate             Ant: simple

The new dance club had a great light show; the baroque furnishings seemed right in place.


6. bauble- a showy but useless thing (noun) Syn: trinket Ant: important value

John had to find some kind of bauble to give Mary for Christmas.


7. bedlam- a noisy uproar; a scene of wild confusion (noun) Syn: chaos Ant: calm

The concert hall was sheer bedlam until the rock star appeared.


8. beguile- to deceive; to charm; to enchant (verb) Syn: betray Ant: be loyal/faithful

Scarlett O'Hara tried to beguile all the eligible men she met.

9. besiege- to overwhelm; to surround and attack (verb) Syn: badger Ant: leave alone

Congressmen were besieged with phone calls during the controversial hearings.


10. besmirch- to make dirty;to stain (verb)       Syn: soil, sully, smear Ant: cleanse

My ex-best friend tried to besmirch my reputation with her vicious gossip.


11. bestial- savage, brutal (adj.)     Syn: brutish, vile, cruel   Ant: humane, kind 

He took a bestial delight in tormenting the captive slaves.


12. bilious- bad tempered; cross (adj.) Syn: grouchy, cantankerous   Ant: pleasant

No one could stand being in the same room with Sam when he was in a bilious mood.


13. blanch- to whiten, to make pale (verb) Syn: bleach Ant: blacken

Sue's face blanched visibly when she saw the charred remains of what had been her home.


14. bland- mild, tasteless, dull (adj.) Syn: smooth             Ant: exciting, thrilling

His bland manner had a calming effect on the children.


15.blandishment- flattery (noun) Syn: adulation Ant: criticism 

Silky-smooth blandishments poured from his lips as he tried to butter up the old lady.
