7.8 How humans reduce biodiversity

Biodiversity - the variety of different species on earth, or within an ecosystem

Functions

Lots of biodiversity = stable ecosystem

To live, we must have a good level of biodiversity

  • humans damage environment - reducing biodiversity

Natural resources are being used faster than they can be replaced - may run out of resources

Deforestation destroys habitats - reduces biodiversity

Waste we produce makes its way into water / land / air (pollution, harms organisms)

Toxic chemicals seep into surrounding ecosystems from nuclear waste & landfill

Industrial process release sulfur dioxide (directly harm animals & causes acid rain)
