AIM notes

AI Referencing

Demonstrates academic integrity
  • A group assignment requires analysing large data set. Your group decides to use an AI tool to automate initial data analysis; subsequent discussions and conclusions are based on the group's interpretation and analysis

Does not demonstrate academic integrity
  • You use AI tools to brainstorm ideas for your assignment and include these ideas alongside your own original ideas. You do not reference the AI took because it is not an academic source.

  • You submit an essay generated by AI as your class assignment, while acknowledging the AI's contribution.

  • A topic on your course overlaps with a personal hobby. You use an AI tool to integrate your written reflections on your hobby into the academic perspective on the topic. You do not think it is necessary to credit the AI for its role because for you the academic perspective is not the main content.

  • A fellow student provides you with an AI-generated summary of reading material. You rephrase it slightly and include it in your assignment. You cite the book, not the AI and not your friend.

reminder:

  • Ask for appropriate help when necessary from tutors or advisors

  • Do not re-use your work inappropriately (i.e. duplication or self-plagiarism)

  • Always give a reference whenever you use someone else's idea or media asset

  • Check the copyright permission before you use a media asset

  • Check what referencing system to use for your assignments, remembering that this may differ between disciplines

  • Use text-matching software approved by your institution in line with the course or lecturer's guidance on its use to support the writing process

  • Never use a contract cheating service

  • Never do an assignment for a friend or ask them to do an assignment for you

  • Always acknowledge any AI-generated content used in your learning

  • Acknowledge AI-assisted content in accordance with your institutional policies

  • Can you think of any others to add to the list?
