Overview

  • Hair colorants are used by both genders to alter natural hair color.

  • They work by removing existing color and/or adding a new color.

Types of Color Additives

  • In the US, both approved and non-approved color additives are used in hair coloring products.

Classification of Hair Coloring Products (NOP)

  1. Non-Oxidative Products (TS)

    • Temporary Dyes

    • Semi-Permanent Dyes

  2. Oxidative Products (DPB)

    • Demi-Permanent Dyes

    • Permanent Dyes

    • Hair Bleaches

  3. Progressive Hair Dyes

    • These are permanent but not oxidative.

Hair Bleaching

  • A chemical process for removing natural hair pigment or artificial color.

Quality-Related Issues

  • Common concerns include (VPUSMCR):

    • Valve clogging

    • Poor foaming of hair mousse

    • Unstable foam

    • Separation of emulsions

    • Microbiological contamination

    • Clumping

    • Rancidification
