Types of LTM

episodic memory -

  • LTM store for personal events

  • retrieved consciously and with effort

  • people, objects, place and behaviour involved

  • time stamped memories (which means you remember when and what happened)

  • eg concerts. birthday parties, first day of school


semantic memory -

  • contains our shared knowledge of the world - likened by an encyclopaedia or dictionary

  • not time stamped - we do not remember when learnt

  • consciously retrieved

  • eg meanings of words, dates such as the Battle of Hastings


procedural memory -

  • our memory for actions or skills - how we do things

  • muscle-based memory

  • we can recall these memories without conscious awareness or much effort (eventually)

  • eg driving, walking, eating, talking
