WWI - Soviet Union/Animal Farm

Germany:

Germany was one of the youngest empires but at the time it was the strongest.

  • Triple alliance with Aus/Hun and Italy
  • France lost a lot of land
  • Germany, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, scramble for colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.
  • On August 3rd Germany declared war on Russia 🠮 Cutting through Britain causing them to become a part of the war. This war was caused by the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was killed by a Serbian terrorist group in 1917.
  • Battle of Verdun 1916 🠮 400,000 Germans were killed

Militarism became huge stress among everyone.

Franz was an heir to the imperial throne of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Karl Marx

His main point: The person that plants the tomatoes, waters them, and takes care of them should get the tomatoes. The rich should not be able to take advantage of the labor they did not do. On Feb 21, 1848, Marx published “The Communist Manifesto” (Old Major’s Speech)

Created marxism

George Orwell

In 1945 Animal Farm was published to expose the Soviet Union. Orwell hated totalitarian governments he wrote all the facts as he saw them 🠮 he was biased.

Totalitarian government is an extreme form of dictatorship, total control (China, Russia)

Bolshevik Revolution of 1917

Vladimir Lenin established a communist government using Karl Marx’s ideas. Tsar Nicholas ll, stepped down because of the violent protests 🠮 Destroying police stations, and killing soldiers 🠮 army was called. In the fall of 1918, the Bolsheviks created the “Red Army '' created by Leon Trotsky who fought against the “White Army '' who were former officers of the Tsars. The Whites were out to destroy the Reds and get back Russia. (The Battle of the Cowshed)

Lenin died in 1924 shortly after the Civil War had ended. He had left Trotsky and Joseph Stalin in charge. (Lenin can be compared to Old Major for making the idea of a revolution come to life)

Joseph Stalin

5 year plan to make the Soviet Union modern 🠮 Moving away from farming and agriculture to producing goods (Napoleon starting to trade with other farmers) 1920

Stalin took land from his citizens to create collect farms and give food out “fairly” 🠮 Many people starved, they protested by destroying everything they produced 1917

Stalin took food from Ukrainian farmers and closed the border to let them slowly starve to death. (Napoleon takes most food for himself without the animals knowing) (The Russo-Ukrainian War)

5 Million peasants starved to death

Stalin covered this all up calling himself a HERO (Napoleons song)

People loved Stalin because he covered up everything about the Fahim, and children were brainwashed to see him as a superhero (Napoleon stealing everything that snowball did, claiming Snowballs accomplishments as his own)

The Gulag was a cold camp that worked people to death. If you disagreed with communism or Stalin it was DEATH or Gulag. Stalin held 3 show trials, which were made to show people that he was fair, yet they were not fair at all 🠮 everyone died (When the sheep and chicken came forward for something they didn’t do and got murdered by dogs)

In 1940 Trotsky was killed. He had called out Stalin for becoming a fascist and killing many people. He was exiled from the Union and was later assassinated by the NKVD 🠮 Napoleon’s dogs

Soviet Union & Nazis

For years The soviet union and german were big enemies. So everyone was surprised to hear the 2 doctors announce the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact in 1939. (Trading with Fredrick)

Hilter believed that the “Red army” was a threat to taking over the U.K. Hilter wanted to destroy the Jewish population in the Soviet Union. On 22 June 1941 Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa', the invasion of the Soviet Union. It was the beginning of a campaign that would ultimately decide the Second World War. (War with Fredrick)
