Introduction to Waves

  • Waves are disturbances that transfer energy from one place to another.

  • Created when a source of energy causes a vibration—this can be either a back-and-forth or up-and-down motion.

Types of Waves

1. Transverse Waves

  • Definition: Waves that move at right angles to the direction of the movement.

  • Visual Concept: Think of these waves as moving "up and down."

2. Longitudinal Waves

  • Definition: Waves that move in the same direction as the wave movement.

  • Visual Concept: Imagine these as "compression" waves where regions of compression and rarefaction alternate.

Longitudinal Waves

  • Parts of Longitudinal Waves:

    • Compressions: Regions where coils are close together.

    • Rarefactions: Regions where coils are spread apart.

    • Wavelength: The distance from one compression to the next compression.

Transverse Waves

  • Parts of Transverse Waves:

    • Equilibrium: The position where the material would rest if no wave moved through it.

    • Crest: The highest point of the wave above the equilibrium.

    • Trough: The lowest point of the wave below the equilibrium.

    • Amplitude: The maximum distance moved from equilibrium (can be above or below).

    • Wavelength: The distance between two crests or two troughs.

Wave Classification

1. Mechanical Waves

  • Definition: These waves require a medium to travel through.

  • Medium: Can be solid, liquid, or gas.

  • Examples:

    • Ocean waves

    • Sound waves

2. Electromagnetic Waves

  • Definition: These waves do not require a medium to move.

  • Nature: Can only be transverse waves.

  • Examples:

    • Light waves

    • Radio waves

    • Microwaves
