Location and Boundaries of the Temporal Lobe
- The temporal lobe is situated below the Sylvian fissure and above the occipitotemporal notch.
- Sylvian Fissure: Serves as a boundary and is associated with the middle cerebral artery (MCA).
- Occipitotemporal Notch: Not easily visible; marks a boundary between the temporal lobe and the occipital lobe.
Brodmann's Areas in the Temporal Lobe
- Numerous Brodmann’s areas exist within the temporal lobe, particularly regarding the auditory system:
- BA 41, 42, and 22: Address auditory functions.
- Visual streams from the occipital lobe enter, aiding object recognition via the ventral visual stream and STS stream (Superior Temporal Sulcus).
- The fusiform gyrus is integral for recognizing faces and objects and straddles the border between the occipital and temporal lobes.
Functions of the Temporal Lobe
1. Auditory Processing
- Primary Auditory Cortex (A1): Located in Heschl's gyrus, the primary site for auditory processing.
- Tonotopic Organization: Neurons in A1 respond to specific frequencies; organized so that neurons respond best to specific sound frequencies.
- Example: Hot colors indicate low frequencies; cool colors indicate high frequencies in auditory maps.
2. Visual Recognition
- The temporal lobe integrates visual information with auditory input:
- Ventral Stream: For object identification and recognition (the 'what' pathway).
- STS Stream: Specifically processes biological motion (e.g. identifying moving individuals).
3. Emotion and Emotional Processing
- Emotional processing occurs within the insular cortex, associated with the limbic system:
- Amygdala: Processes strong emotions, including fear and anger.
- Hippocampus: Plays a crucial role in memory formation; closely situated to the amygdala, reinforcing the link between emotional experiences and memory.
4. Learning and Memory Functions
- Memory is intimately linked with emotion:
- Flashbulb Memories: Vivid memories from emotionally charged events.
- Memory Formation is facilitated through LTP (Long Term Potentiation) and LTD (Long Term Depression):
- LTP strengthens synaptic connections, while LTD weakens them.
- Methodologies involve stimulating neurons to study their firing patterns and connections.
Synaptic Mechanisms of Learning
- Hebbian Plasticity: "Cells that fire together, wire together."
- Neuronal communication and response strengthen through simultaneous firing, facilitated by processes like calcium influx affecting postsynaptic receptors.
