Defensibility: Scale

Scale

Scale is a form of defensibility where increased volume leads to increased value for end customers.

  • Scale creates a loop: More users/customers → increased value → increased retention, acquisition, and monetization → more users/customers.

Forms of Scale

1. Better Prices/Decreased Costs
  • As volume grows, the cost of underlying components decreases.
  • Example: Amazon gets lower product costs due to increased transaction volume.
  • Lower costs increase retention, acquisition, and monetization.
2. Increased Product Value
  • As volume increases, the product value to users increases.
  • Example: Netflix invests additional subscribers' money into creating more original content.
  • More original content increases retention, acquisition, and willingness to pay.

Impact

  • Scale impacts underlying model components if cost decreases or product value increases flow to the end consumer.
  • It also drives acquisition loops through better conversions and improves LTV through better retention or increased willingness to pay.
