H. French 3: Imperative

• You use the imperative when giving orders, instructions, and advice.

• Use the forms tu, nous, and vous in the present tense.

  • Prenons des photos.

  • Va au supermarche.

  • Faites attention.

• For the subject pronoun tu, you take off the “s” in the imperative.

  • Tu manges du chocolat —> Mange du chocolate.

  • Tu vas au parc —> Va au parc

The Affirmative Order:

• To do something

• Get rid of the subject pronoun

• The object pronoun is placed after the verb

• Place a hyphen between the verb and pronoun

  • Tu me la donnes? —> Donne-la-moi

  • Tu en prends —> Prends-en

Negative Orders:

• The object pronouns go before the verbs.

• Ne + object + conjugated verb + pas

  • Ne donne pas la lampe a Louis —> Ne la lui donne pas

Reciprocal verbs:

• Se —> toi, vous, nous

  • Se reposer

    • Repose-toi

    • Reposez-vous

    • Reposons-nous

Irregular: Etre and Avoir

• Etre: sois, soyons, soyez

  • EX: Sois prudent

• Avoir: aie, ayons, ayez

  • EX: N’ayez pas peur
