Stability and Center of Gravity

All structures have a center of gravity (CoG)

Humans are structures so we also have a CoG.

Stability

The lower the CoG, the more stable the structure.

To lower the CoG we can either make the structure shorter or we can widen the base of the structure.

Structural Components

Arches- allows for the force to be spread equally through the curves. They take a lot less materials to create and can be creates much faster. The CoG must stay within the arches base.

Domes- one of the oldest types of structures. Provides shelter from elements to protect food and other valuables

Beams- Often shapes in the letter “I” and often made out of steel.

Triangles- trangles are very sturdy. You can press on them from any point and the forces will be transfered elsewhere.

Structural failure- structural failure is when the structure cannot withstand the forces being placed on it.
