Unconscious Infant Choking

Steps

  1. If you have not already, call for help now.
  2. Assess the patient for responsiveness if you have just arrived to the scene.
  3. When the patient is deemed unresponsive, begin CPR (See “Infant CPR” note sheet)
  4. After 30 compressions, bring the baby’s head to a neutral position to look for a visible object.

       1. If there is no visible object, attempt two rescue breaths and resume compressions.    2. If there is an object, sweep it out with your pinkie finger. Attempt rescue breaths.

  1. If the object is removed, reassess the patient.

       1. If the pulse is above 60 BPM but there is no breathing, perform rescue breathing.    2. If the pulse is slow (below 60 BPM) or there is no pulse, resume CPR.

  1. Proceed with the appropriate procedures until:

       1. Help arrives    2. An AED arrives    3. The patient revives
