Unconscious Infant Choking
Steps
- If you have not already, call for help now.
- Assess the patient for responsiveness if you have just arrived to the scene.
- When the patient is deemed unresponsive, begin CPR (See “Infant CPR” note sheet)
- After 30 compressions, bring the baby’s head to a neutral position to look for a visible object.
- If there is no visible object, attempt two rescue breaths and resume compressions.
- If there is an object, sweep it out with your pinkie finger. Attempt rescue breaths.
- If the object is removed, reassess the patient.
- If the pulse is above 60 BPM but there is no breathing, perform rescue breathing.
- If the pulse is slow (below 60 BPM) or there is no pulse, resume CPR.
- Proceed with the appropriate procedures until:
- Help arrives
- An AED arrives
- The patient revives
