Perfect tense
The perfect tense (passé composé) is used to talk about single events or actions that happened in the past.
in English the perfect tense has 2 meanings:
eg: il n’a pas joué pour Arsenal
this could either be translated as: ‘he played for Arsenal’ or' ‘he has played for Arsenal
The perfect tense has 2 parts: auxiliary verb + past participle
For the auxiliary verb it’s either avoir or etre (MRS VANDERTRAMP)
How to form the past participle
-er verbs | remove -er and add é | changé |
-ir verbs | remove -ir and add i | fini |
-re verbs | remove -re and add u | entendu |
With negatives, the negative expression (ne.. pas) goes around the auxiliary verb
eg: Elle n’a pas vu ce film
