High humidity creates an ecosystem where life thrives on decay, including slime molds and fungi.
Fungi play a crucial role in nutrient recycling by connecting to tree roots and breaking down organic matter.
The rate of recycling is extremely fast in tropical forests, supporting the growth of nearly 1,000,000 fungi species, most of which are still unidentified.
Fungi serve as food for various organisms, including beetle larvae, which are led to them by their parents.
Chapter 4: Colonies Of Ants
Approximately 80% of all insects reside in jungles, among which ants are extremely numerous.
Bullet ants are affected by the parasitic cordyceps fungus, which alters their behavior and leads them to climb and grip stems.
Infected ants are removed from the colony to prevent contagion, as the fungus can grow out of their heads, erupting and spreading spores.
This fungus threatens ant populations but also contributes to ecological balance by preventing overpopulation.
