Reflection
A reflection about your site analysis and your case study investigation, describing what you learned from this building and the site's context. Reflect on which passive strategies from your case study could be appropriate for your project in Panmure, and how you plan to apply this knowledge to your Wānanga project?
My site analysis for Panmure focused on wind direction, speed, and comfort. This allows us to have a clear idea of what it would feel like being on the site and how we can orient our concept proposals to either prevent or utilise wind. This is important as it can enable a passive design that uses less energy to cool our buildings. Also, this dictates the placement of communal spaces and gets us thinking if we can add or remove volumes to create a more comfortable environment that is pleasant for people, either using the space or just passing by.
Reflecting on the Wynyard Central case study, we can inform passive design strategies to create a responsive and wellbeing-focused environment. The integration of green infrastructure, such as rain gardens and permeable landscapes, can be adapted to the Panmure site through the introduction of riparian pathways and healing gardens, which not only mitigate stormwater and reduce urban heat island effects but also enhance the psychological wellbeing of users. Additionally, Wynyard Central’s emphasis on pedestrian prioritisation and reduced vehicle dominance aligns closely with the project’s goal of creating a community-oriented precinct, supporting clear and intuitive circulation while improving accessibility and patient flow.
Furthermore, for my project, passive solar design strategies, building orientation, maximising natural daylight, and controlling shading can be applied to ensure internal spaces such as waiting areas and counselling rooms that are naturally lit and thermally comfortable, reducing reliance on mechanical systems. Furthermore, the use of natural ventilation and operable façades can support indoor air quality, which is especially important in healthcare-adjacent environments. These strategies will be integrated alongside culturally grounded design elements, ensuring that environmental performance works in harmony with community aspirations and connection to Maungarei, contributing to a holistic, sustainable, and healing architectural outcome.
A reflection on your contributions to the collaborative work, detailing your role in the assignment, what deliverables were developed by you, and how you collaborated with other team members?
My contributions to the group included conducting the wind analysis and developing the introductory section of the case study, where I used diagrams to clearly communicate key ideas and contextualise Wynyard Central. I also collaborated with the team to source relevant references and data that supported both the case study and climate analysis. I was delegating the tasks and tracking the progress on a spreadsheet so that everyone is able to keep accountable for themself and understand how everyone is coming along so its a more transparent workflow. Overall, the group demonstrated a strong collective effort, with each member contributing confidently and effectively to the outcome.
