Executive Powers

  • Execute the law (carries out federal law)

  • Ordinance power - power to issue executive orders, more internally focused

  • Appointment power- chooses an Ambassador, 15 cabinet, federal agencies, judges, marshals and attorneys

    •  appointing process: president nomination → senate confirmation

  • Removal power - ambassadors cabinet marshal / attorney


Diplomatic Power

  • Treaty - formal agreement between 2 or more countries

    • carries weight of law

    • 2/3 vote of senate

  • Executive Agreement - formal agreement between president and head of foreign country

  • recognition power - receives diplomatic representatives from other countries, can send US ambassadors to foreign countries


Military Powers

  • Commander in Chief, not in the military tho

  • only person who can use nuclear weapons

  • can make undeclared war - have acted in 10 wars / conflict without declaring war, created tension / debate

  • congress declares war

  • war powers act 1973 - reduce war making power of president, doesmt seem very effective


Legislative Power

  • recommend legislation (recommend laws)

  • approve / disapprove legislation (sign or reject a bill)

  • State of the union address

  • Call a special session of congress


Judicial Power

Reprieve: postponement of a sentence

commutation - reduce the length of a sentence / fine

Pardon - legal forgiveness of a crime

Amnesty - pardon on a group of people
