translocation

The movement of sucrose and amino acid [organic molecules] in phloem

  • i.e. products of photosynthesis from leaves

    • 6CO2+6H2O --(Light energy and chlorophyll)-> C6H12O6+6O2

      • Glucose

        • Highly reactive

          • Therefore easily used as it travels

        • Very soluble

      • Sucrose

        • Sparingly soluble

          • Not as reactive

Sources and sinks

  • A source

    • Structure/part of the plant where the organic molecules/substances are made

      • e.g. leaf

      • Green stem

  • A sink

    • The structure/part where the substances/molecules are transported to for storage or usage

      • e.g. roots

        • Like potatoes, onions, carrots

Class task

  • Why is it that sources and sinks can change with a change in season

    • Because God told them to

    • In some seasons the leaves die

      • Autumn and winter

      • The source cannot be the leaves anymore

      • The roots provide the food that was stored in summer

      • Anywhere else on the plant can be the source now
