Principles
SPATIAL
Architectural heirarchy means prioritising crucial elements more and giving them more spac or focus than others
Contrast means putting one or more contrasting elements together to make the design more attractive
Balance of visual weight in a structure, designers find balance between every visual weight and place them accordingly
Proportion means the size of the elements where the crucial element of the structure is in a focal point by enlarging the length size and width
Rhythm is a pause and variation between the elements in a structure
Pattern is repeated elements that have the same functionality or work together numerous times
Emphasis means highlighting/putting importance of something over other parts. This emphasis helps to distinguish the crucial parts from others by highlighting them.
Unity is the cumulative result of how different elements work together where in a design each element holds a deliberate place and purpose contributing to a whole idea.
Space refers to the area around, between, or within composed elements, this determines a design’s effectiveness and aesthetic appeal.
DESIGN
Functional Purpose & Usage: What is the core purpose of this space? A strong concept aligns the layout directly with its intended usage. Look at spatial worflows, daily routines, physical reuqirements of the user to ensure the design is functional
Context & Integration: Engaging with immediate surroundings (landscape, existing buildings, honoring history)
Visual Axes & sightlines: Framing the experience through movement and sightlines that are invisislbe threads that guide us around a building. Connect indoors with outdoors with visual axes, frame specific views, create a sense of depth and curiosity that draws you through a space.
Solar Orientation & Natural Light: Micro-managing light and shadow throughout the day, analyse sun path shapes the atmospheric quality of a space and improve user wellbeing. Maximise natural daylight, create emotional warmth, and elevate indoor climate.
Material & Tactile Experience: Authentic regional materials to give concepts structural depth and a grounding contrast.
