Breathing for the Child

Breathing for the Child

Steps for Mouth-to-Mouth Breathing (OPSPCUC/ANMBCAC)

  1. Open the Airway

    • Use the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver.

  2. Pinch Nostril and Seal Mouth

    • Pinch the child's nostrils shut.

    • Cover the child's mouth with yours.

  3. Provide Breaths

    • Give one breath for one second; watch for chest rise.

    • If chest rises, give a second breath.

    • If not, repeat the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver, then give the second breath.

    • Avoid excessive breaths or forceful breathing.

  4. Continue CPR Cycle

    • After two breaths, resume compressions and breaths immediately.

    • If two rescuers are present, switch every two minutes or sooner if tired.

    • Provide 1 to 2 breaths after every 15 compressions.

  5. Use of AED

    • Follow AED instructions as soon as available.

    • Use pediatric pads for children aged 4 weeks to 8 years; adult pads if pediatric are unavailable.

    • Administer one shock, then resume CPR for two more minutes before another shock.

    • If untrained in AED use, follow instructions from a 911 operator.

  6. Continue CPR

    • Continue CPR until the child moves or professional help arrives.
