Definition and Overview
- Maps represent distorted images of the globe.
- Distortion occurs in direction, shape, area, or distance due to projection from a 3D object (globe) to a 2D surface.
- Numerous map projections exist, but only few are essential for AP Human Geography.
Common Map Projections
Mercator Projection
- Conformal projection.
- Excellent for accurate directions (used in naval expeditions).
- Significant distortion of size and location of landmasses.
