SIMPLE CIRCUITS

Chapter 6.1

WHAT IS ELECTRICITY?

  • Electricity is defined as a form of energy.

  • It involves the movement of electrons throughout a conductor.

  • It is beneficial because it can be easily converted into various forms of energy:
      - Kinetic energy
      - Sound energy
      - Thermal energy

ELECTRIC CHARGE

  • All matter is composed of atoms.

  • Atoms consist of three primary subatomic particles:
      - Neutrons: These have no charge (neutral).
      - Protons: Positively charged particles.
      - Electrons: Negatively charged particles.

  • Protons and neutrons coexist within the dense nucleus of the atom, while electrons (which are approximately the size of a proton or a neutron) orbit this nucleus.

  • Usually, atoms have an equal number of protons and electrons, resulting in a neutral charge.

IONS

  • Electrons can be displaced from their orbits. When an atom loses an electron, it gains an overall positive charge; such atoms are referred to as ions.

  • Conversely, when atoms gain additional electrons, they develop a negative charge.

STATIC ELECTRICITY

  • Defined as the accumulation of electrons that have been dislodged on a surface, which leads to a negatively charged surface.

  • Static electricity will gradually dissipate into the environment over time.

  • If the negative charge becomes substantial, the electrons can "jump" to a positively charged surface.

  • This transference causes an energy transformation manifesting as:
      - Light energy
      - Kinetic energy
      - Sound energy
      - Thermal energy

  • Example phenomena include sparks or lightning bolts.

CURRENT ELECTRICITY

  • In contrast to static electricity, current electricity is utilized in electrical appliances.

  • Current electricity is characterized by the movement of electrons along a conductor, such as a wire.

  • As electrical energy traverses through various energy users (for instance, light bulbs, heating elements, or motors), it is transformed into usable energy.

SIMPLE ELECTRIC CIRCUITS

  • An electrical circuit is conceptualized as the path along which electrons travel and convey their energy.

  • Components of a simple electrical circuit include:
      - Energy Source: This can be a battery, a power outlet, or a generator, supplying electrons with energy.
      - Energy User: Devices that utilize the energy delivered by electrons, such as light bulbs, heating elements, or motors.
      - Conductors: Typically wires, these allow electrons to pass through the entire circuit.

  • If there is a break in the circuit (for example, when an appliance is switched off), the flow of electrons is interrupted, halting the current.

CIRCUIT COMPONENTS

  • Each individual part of the circuit is referred to as a component.

  • Circuit components are represented by specific symbols in circuit diagrams.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM

  • A circuit diagram comprises a simplified representation of a circuit or electrical device.

  • An example given involves a torch; as electrons travel around this circuit, they transfer energy to the energy users before being replenished at the energy source.
