The Heart

  • the heart is an organ made out of a muscle known as cardiac muscle

  • the function of the heart is to pump oxygenated blood all around the body

  • it also sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs to remove carbon dioxide and collect oxygen

  • the heart is divided into the right and left sides by a wall called a septum

  • each side has an upper chamber (the atrium) and a lower chamber (the ventricle)

    Blood Circulation:

  • blood enters the body through the right atrium (through the vena cava) and the left atrium (through the pulomary vein) at the same time

  • the right ventricle contracts to force blood into the pulmonary artery to the lungs, at the same time, the left ventricle contracts to force blood into the aorta

  • the arteries that bring nutrients and oxygen to the heart are called corony arteries
