In your own words, write a multi-paragraph response in which you analyze the descriptions of New York found in the two passages. Be sure to consider how Galbraithe’s reflections on New York in Passage 1 are similar to or different from the historical account of the city in Passage 2. Your response must be based on ideas and information that can be found in the passages.

Manage your time carefully so that you can:

  • use your own words to establish and develop your thesis statement;
  • use evidence from both passages to support your thesis statement;
  • focus on the purpose and audience of the task; and
  • use your own words to develop your thesis statement by clarifying the relationship between your ideas and evidence.

Be sure to:

  • include an introduction with a clear thesis statement;
  • create clear, organized paragraphs that reflect a sense of cohesion;
  • edit your response to check the grammar, structure, and mechanics of your sentences; and
  • include a conclusion that follows from the ideas you developed.

Write your multi-paragraph response in the space provided.

In Passage 1, New York is described as a city with a big crowd and Galbraithe describes that he had lost his ability of cunning in a crowd, he also describes how he wishes he hadn’t left even tough. It is also described how the old stream of commuters let him know he was at home. He could recognize almost everyone in town and not many people had changed. As stated in the passage, they passed the same remarks, carried the same bundles and wore the same clothes. Not much had changed since he left. Galbraithe appreciates the beauty that was found in New York, while some other people didn't seem to notice the scene around them. In Passage 2, the city is described as finely built presenting an aspect of industry. However, the southern part is described as densely built and that between City Hall and Twenty-third street New York was way more populated than any other city in the United States. Multiple of the old quarters were built with brick and they also refer to the frame house as rare.

Some similarities of passage 1 and 2 are that in both is described how the city is highly crowded with citizens. It shows how there's always been crowds and lines that would cover the front of multiple other businesses. The population in New York has increased at a very high rate. The southern part is highly populated. Some differences of passage 1 and 2 are that in passage one New York is described from the point of view of someone who has lived in the city and sees it more like home while in the second passage it is describing the population and the architecture point of view.

In conclusion, New York is described in many ways, some of them being the same or very different, however they all show the beauty that the place has and how some people appear to not see what's around them and this causing the place to be underestimated.
