You May Lose Your License
Responsibility: Obey all traffic laws; violations lead to court punishments.
License Loss Types: Cancellation (no reinstatement), Revocation (can reapply), Suspension (can get back).
Reinstatement Fees
$100 minimum plus additional fees:
$50 for failure to surrender license.
$75 for drug-related charges.
$50 for child support suspension.
License Cancellation
Causes: Ineligibility, falsifying info, or fraud.
License Revocation
Applies to serious offenses:
Manslaughter, 2nd DUI, habitual drug use, felony use, failure to stop in an accident, perjury, reckless driving, unauthorized vehicle use.
License Suspension
Possible for:
Serious offense repeaters, negligent driving, unlawful use, other state offenses, fleeing police, racing, failing to respond to court summons, school withdrawal, non-maintenance of SR-22 insurance, non-payment of child support, medical issues, excessive points, first DUI, or drug offenses.
The Alabama Point System
Identifies problem drivers; the Department of Public Safety informs drivers of suspensions.
Points Assessment: Points assigned for various traffic violations, with corresponding values (e.g., 6 points for DUI, 5 for failing to yield).
Suspension Periods
12-14 points: 60 days
15-17 points: 90 days
18-20 points: 120 days
21-23 points: 180 days
24+ points: 365 days
Points clear after 2 years but remain on record.
