THAI SENTENCE STRUCTURE PT.2
1. Sentence Structure Variations (Beyond Basic SVO)
Thai can be flexible, so you don’t always need to follow Subject-Verb-Object strictly! Here are some ways word order can change:
(1) Subject Omission (Drop "I/You")
Thai speakers often skip the subject if it’s obvious from context.
✅ Normal:
ฉันหิว (Chan hiw) → I’m hungry.
✅ More natural Thai:หิวแล้ว (Hiu laew) → (I’m) hungry now.
✅ Normal:
คุณไปไหน? (Khun pai nai?) → Where are you going?
✅ More natural:ไปไหน? (Pai nai?) → Going where?
(2) Emphasizing Time & Place (Put Time First!)
In Thai, time and place often go at the beginning for emphasis.
✅ English Order:
I will go to Bangkok tomorrow.
✅ Thai Order (Sounds More Natural):พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะไปกรุงเทพ (Phrung nee chan ja pai Krung Thep)
→ Tomorrow, I will go to Bangkok.
✅ Example:
เมื่อวานไปทะเล (Muea waan pai talay) → Yesterday (I) went to the beach.
เช้านี้กินกาแฟแล้ว (Chao nee kin gaa-fae laew) → This morning (I) already drank coffee.
(3) Using "แล้ว (Laew)" to Mean "Already" & Change Tense
"แล้ว (Laew)" is a super useful word in Thai that can change sentence meanings:
✅ Past Tense (Already Done)
ฉันกินข้าวแล้ว (Chan kin khao laew) → I already ate.
เขากลับบ้านแล้ว (Khao glap baan laew) → He already went home.
✅ Softening Statements (Making Something Sound Less Harsh)
Instead of saying:
🚫 ไม่รักเธอ (Mai rak ter) → I don’t love you. (Ouch!)
✅ More gentle:
ไม่รักแล้ว (Mai rak laew) → I don’t love you anymore. (Softer)
✅ Giving an Update ("Now It’s Like This")
ฝนตกแล้ว (Fon tok laew) → It’s raining now.
ถึงบ้านแล้ว (Teung baan laew) → I’ve arrived home.
🌟 2. Making Sentences Sound More Natural
Thai spoken language has tricks to make speech sound more casual, polite, or emotional!
(1) Adding "Na (นะ)" for Softness
"นะ (Na)" is used to soften requests, suggestions, and friendly speech.

✅ Asking for Agreement:

(2) Adding "หน่อย (Noi)" to Sound Polite in Requests
"หน่อย (Noi)" makes requests sound less demanding and more polite (kind of like "a little" or "please").
✅ Direct (Too strong):
ช่วยเปิดประตู (Chuay bpert pratuu) → Open the door. (Sounds bossy!)
✅ Polite Thai:ช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อย (Chuay bpert pratuu noi) → Could you open the door a little? (Sounds nice!)
✅ Other Examples:
