Benzodiazapines

name of med - generic and trade

know - adivan ( lorazepam) - a medication commonly prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders.

• know the actions for the drugs , can be taken prn

• benzos are GABA inhancers( neurotransmitter that calms you down)

• know side effects like drowsiness, motor issues, dizziness, GI issues

• know adverse effects like resp depression and fall risk, risk of dependency, high risk for abuse.

• know nursing implications like monitoring use with opiods or any CNS depressants because they cause respiratory depression , be aware or use of heavy machinery like driving, patients have to taper off or ween off (no cold turkey). avoid coffee.

Hydroxazine (non benzo) also used for anxiety, used PRN, less adverse affects, no abuse, good for sedation, used for general anxiety and is often given to people who has history of substance abuse.

inderol (propanolol) is a beta blocker, can be used for anxiety like social anxiety, Differernt than psych drug, causes decrease in hear rate and resp rate. Can be used PRN, or on regualr basis. Monitor blood pressure.

Busparone is a med that works on seratonin. Makes the individual calm which help people with anxiety. Sertonin is important is regulating appetite and mood. Takes 3-4 weeks to be affective. Not a controlled substance. Can have drowsiness and dizziness but not many adverse effects.
