The Conch Shell: a symbol of democracy, law and order of the old world, when Roger destroys it anarchy takes over because any hope of strong, central leadership had been abandoned

The Signal Fire: rescue, the smoke that it gives off is their best way to get rescued

Pigs: line of aggression which becomes more dominant, Jack's leadership, the first killing of a pig foreshadows Piggy's death

The Lord of the Flies: the power of evil, translates to devil

Piggy’s Specs: the voice of reason and logic among the boys, intelligence and education, Piggy defends his glasses even more than the conch, they are the solution to the boys' problems

The Island: isolation, serves as the perfect backdrop for the frailties of human nature which eventually surface

Face Paint: portal into savagery, a mask that allows the boys to become someone their not

The Parachutist: the end of adult supervision

The Scar: destruction, time spent on the island will leave the boys with physical and emotional scars

Ralph: law-abiding hardworking citizen who works for the good of the group and hopes that everything will turn out ok if the just follow the rules

Jack: destructive forces in society, ruthless and evil, gains power over fear, wants to dominate society

Piggy: intellectual who tries to solve problems with logic and reason, the boys pay little attention to him, therefore his intelligence is ineffective

Simon: mystic, spiritual leader, or philosopher, "knows" things

Sam and Eric: tug-of-war within us to remain good

Littluns: the common folk, who easily follow the lead of others into savagery when there is no enforced structure in society
