Key Terms-
Dead ball- The ball is dead after a point, side out
Catching or holding the ball- When the ball momentarily comes to rest in
the hands of a player, the ball must be clearly batted
Foot fault- Server steps on or over the end line during the act of serving
before the server’s hand contacts the ball
Out of bounds- Any surface or object outside the court except a player in
the act of playing the ball
Match- A team wins three out of five games, sometimes two out of three
games
Rotation- Shifting of players in position for service, players rotate clockwise
Serving order- Order in which players are to serve throughout an entire
game
Side out- When the serving team fails to win its point or plays the ball
illegally, the serve goes to the opposing team
Term of Service- The server continues to serve until the referee calls a side
out
Volley- Consists of one contact with the ball by a player, a maximum of three
contacts by one side before the ball goes over the net
Net serve- Serving into the net; side out
Ace- when the ball is served to the other team and no one touches it
Roof- when a player jumps above the height of the net, and blocks the ball
Stuf- when a player jumps about the height of the net, blocks the ball, and
the ball goes back to the other teams side
Dig- when a player makes a save from a very difficult spike
Kill- when a team spikes the ball and it either ends in a point or a sideout
