Magnitude and Opposites

  • Magnitude (weight) of a number: the distance it is from 0 on the number line. Expressed as the absolute value: x|x| for a number xx.

  • Opposites: two numbers on opposite sides of zero but the same distance from zero.

  • Examples:

    • What is the magnitude of 10-10? 10=10|{-10}| = 10

    • What is the magnitude of 88? 8=8|8| = 8

    • Opposite of 6-6: 66

    • Opposite of 77: 7-7
