Magnitude and Opposites

• Magnitude (weight) of a number: the distance it is from 0 on the number line. Expressed as the absolute value: $|x|$ for a number $x$.

• Opposites: two numbers on opposite sides of zero but the same distance from zero.

• Examples:

  • What is the magnitude of $-10$? $|{-10}| = 10$

  • What is the magnitude of $8$? $|8| = 8$

  • Opposite of $-6$: $6$

  • Opposite of $7$: $-7$
